PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium which provides the increased output and decreased noise and has an excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristic by incorporating specific phosphate into a magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:The phosphate expressed by the formula 1 is incorporated into the magnetic layer. In the formula 1, R1 is the group consisting of the formula 2. With the phosphate expressed by the formula 1, the bond of a (meth) acryloyl group with an alkylene oxide structural part (R'O) is estimated to appear as an effect of improving the dispersibility of magnetic powder. On the other hand, the affinity to a binder resin and org. solvent is much improved by the (meth)acryloyl group and as a result the balance between the hydrophilicity and lipophilicity as the entire part of the dispersant is possibly maintained in the range adequate for improving the dispersibility of the magnetic powder. The diester in which one of R2, R3 in the formula 1 is hydrogen and the other is the group similar to R1 is more particularly preferable.
