PURPOSE:To assure efficient identification of KANJI(Chinese characters) by providing a first KANJI selection area, a second KANJI selection area and plural character species selection area in a character species selection area for classifying input KANJI according to certain species and allotting them to associated area. CONSTITUTION:In character input processing, the user first manually writes the character on a writer area on a cordinate reading surface of a coordinate reading device 11 whereby the corresponding coordinate values are transmitted to a character recognition emans 12. The user then specifies one of the first KANJI selection area 31, the second KANJI selection area 32 and plural charac ter species selection area 33. In this way, a character species decision means 13 transmits to the means 12 a control signal specifying character identification within the extent of the character species corresponding to the designated coordi nate. The means 12 outputs character codes obtained as a result of manual character writing with the corresponding character species as object and on the basis of the control signal. In this way, the KANJI can be identified efficient ly.
