<p>Crushed, dried oil shale is treated in a contactor (12) with gaseous ammonia or a gaseous basic aliphatic amine at a temperature between 500 and 800 and at a pressure between 200 and 1000 psig. The treated oil shale is then passed to an extraction zone (20) and there contacted, preferably countercurrently with an organic solvent to extract the kerogen. The solventkerogen mixture is passed to a fractionator (34) wherein the solvent is separated overhead.</p> |
