An X-ray generator is described having a large number of setting variants and a laminar display device (11) which is used for operator control and by means of which on the one hand the operating parameters of the X-ray generator available for selection and on the other hand the actually selected values and methods of operation are in each case displayed so that they can be identified as such. A detector panel (16, 17), which is used for selection of the operating parameters and methods of operation, is arranged in front of the display device (11) in the viewing direction. A specific control function is selectively allocated to each defined raster point in this detector panel. <IMAGE>
