The device consists of a thin film comprising a recording layer formed on a substrate. The film is made of TeOx(aCa mixture of tell urium and tellurium dioxide) with a small amount of gold being added. THe contents of tell urium, oxygen and gold in atomic percent fall within a predetermined region on a composition diagram. There may be provided on either one or both of the recording layer surfaces a thermal diffusion layer. The latter layer is made of a metal having a greater thermal conductivity than the recording layer, for example, gold, aluminium, nickel or palladium.
