In zigzag slab-laser systems, high beam qualities with respect to the local structure and beam divergence, and hence high power densities at the focus can be achieved if the slab is homogeneously optically pumped and cooled by the polished side surfaces. This is achieved by means of combined gas-liquid cooling, the slab being located in a special slab holder between two pumping chambers which contain the flashlamps. In this arrangement, the slab holder makes possible stress-free attachment of the slab and, at the same time, efficient and homogeneous cooling of the active medium by means of cooling-gas layers of minimum thickness between the slab side surfaces and the liquid-cooled optical side windows. The sandwich construction of the laser head having two pumping chambers on both sides of the slab holder result in high flexibility and maintainability of the system. The special liquid circuit in the pump chambers ensures effective and uniform cooling of the flashlamps, slab, reflectors and housing. A long life of the flashlamps inter alia, is thus also achieved as well as homogenous cooling of the slab. |
