A fibre optic radiation detector suitable for use in a SAW detector or a phase contrast microscope incorporates a pair of radiation guides, one of which is furnished with a delay device, e.g. including a transducer (13). A laser diode (1) launches light into both guides through a coupler (3). Radiation from the free ends (8, 9) of the light guides is focussed on a test sample. Reflected light is focussed and passes back through the light guides to a detector (5). A polarization controller may be used to adjust the polarization state of the radiation in the guides. <IMAGE>
