PURPOSE:To obtain a catalyst for hydrogenation which has a high desulfurization activity and a high denitrification activity and can maintain the activity for a long period of time, by supporting a metal component having a hydrogenation activity on a carrier comprised of amorphous silica/alumina and crystalline alumina having a crystalline diameter less than a particular value. CONSTITUTION:A catalyst for hydrogenation comprising a carrier comprised of about 20-60wt% amorphous silica/alumina (A) and about 80-40wt% crystalline alumina (B) and a metal component having a hydrogenation activity supported on the carrier. The crystalline diameter of the component B constituting the carrier is about 35Angstrom or less. The metal component can be supported, e.g., by a method which comprises a first step of supporting cobalt and/or nickel and a second step of supporting molybdenum and/or tungsten. This catalyst not only has a high desulfurization activity and a high denitrification activity but also can maintain the activity for a long period of time and is particularly suitable for use in hydrodesulfurization of a medium-boiling distillation oil, a high-boiling distillation oil, a residual oil or a mixture thereof.
