PURPOSE:To execute direct recording, display, holding and rewriting of information by a low power consumption, by making a PLZT substrate generate a double refraction by applying a voltage between opposed electrodes which have been formed on the PLZT substrate, and utilizing a characteristic of its double refraction. CONSTITUTION:Every other electrode of a transparent band-shaped electrode group 3 is set to 'O'V, an optional voltage is applied to the remaining electrodes, and simultaneously, a pressure use head 6 is scanned through a polarizing film 4 on a transparent sheet 2, and a display state and a storage state are caused. That is to say, by the pressure use head 6, a part of the band- shaped electrode group 3 is made to cause a display state by generating locally a potential difference on a PLZT plate 1. Subsequently, when the pressure use head 6 is scanned in a state that the potential remains applied to the band- shaped electrode group 3, a contact part of the band-shaped electrode group 3 and the PLZT plate 1 moves, and a part of its locus becomes a storage state. Information which has displayed and recorded can be erased by setting all voltages of the transparent band-shaped electrode plate 3 to 'O'V, and enabling scanning of the head for pressure use.
