PURPOSE:To provide a friction material which is superior in mechanical strength and possesses fade resistance, by a method wherein heat treatment is applied under a predetermined terms to the friction material molded mixing up a filler such as graphite or barium sulfate and a binding material based on thermosetting resin such as phenolic resin with a base by making use of a fiber as the base. CONSTITUTION:Heat treatment is applied to a friction material molded by mixing up a filler such as graphite or barium sulfate and a binding material based on thermosetting resin such as phenolic resin with a base by making use of a fiber such as a steel fiber or an inorganic fiber as the base under predetermined terms wherein the temperature is made more than 300 deg.C and less than 400 deg.C and a heat treatment period of time is made more than 15min and less than four hours within a nonoxidation atmosphere. During the heat treatment the friction material does not deteriorate a material by oxidative destruction of resin which is an ingredient of the friction material and oxidation of the steel fiber, a weight reduction and heating of the friction material are controlled also and dissolution of a binding material is progressed slowly. In consequence of the above, the whole of the friction material can be heat-treated uniformly by reducing a difference between the surface and inside of the friction material based on the heat treatment.
