PURPOSE:To obtain an excellent image having no reversal fog by varying the discharging current value of a before-transfer electrostatic charging means according to the brightness of an original lighting means. CONSTITUTION:An original 1 is lighted by a lamp 2 for original lighting and a photosensitive drum 10 is exposed to reflected light from the original 1 through mirrors 3-6 and a lens 7. An electrostatic latent image is formed on the surface of the photosensitive drum 10 by image line exposure and developed by a developing device 12. This photosensitive drum 10 after said development is charged electrostatically by the before-transfer electrostatic charger 13 which is applied with a discharging current generated by superposing a DC current having the same polarity with toner upon an AC current to remove a charge from the surface of the photosensitive drum 10, and the toner image on the photosensitive drum 10 is further charged electrostatically to the same polarity. The toner image on the photosensitive drum 10 is transferred to an object material 16 by a transfer charger 13, the transfer material 16 is separated from the photosensitive drum 10 by a separation charger 15, and the toner image is fixed by a fixing device.
