PURPOSE:To obtain the thermal ink-transfer system making both directional printing possible, by a method wherein two lines of going and returning ink ribbons arranged at two stages up and down are possessed and the two lines up and down of ink ribbons are exchanged. CONSTITUTION:A print head advances in the horizontal direction indicated by 3 along the ink ribbon 1 of an upper stage in going time while keeping the height position indicated by 2. When the going path has been ended, the ink ribbons move upward as indicated by arrows 6, 7 and the print head faces the returning ink ribbon 12 of the lower stage. In returning time, the print head reversely advances in the horizontal direction indicated by 10 along the ink ribbon 12 of the lower stage while keeping the height position indicated by 11. When the printing in returning time has been ended, respective ink ribbons move downward reversely in the arrows 6, 7 and the going ink ribbon of the upper stage faces the print head. By repeating this operation, both directional printing is achieved.
