The thermal printer comprises a carriage (4) which can move along a cylinder (2), a printing head (5), and a cassette (15) containing the inking ribbon (8), unwound from a pay-out spool (16) and wound on a take-up spool (17). Two rollers (35, 36) are located on the two sides of the printing head (5) and pivotally mounted on levers (37). A spring (40) presses the two rollers against the cylinder (2), when the head (5) is in the printing position. In this manner, the ribbon (8) is pressed perfectly against the paper during, and immediately after, the printing, which ensures very sharp printing. After printing, an electromagnet (11) retracts the head (5) and the two rollers (35, 36) from the cylinder (2). Simultaneously, a clamp (29) locks the two spools (16, 17). <IMAGE>
