PURPOSE:To obtain the titled high-purity compound, by reacting m- trichloromethylbenzoyl chloride prepared by photochlorination of m-toluoyl chloride with m-toluic acid in the presence of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:m-Toluoyl chloride is chlorinated in the side chain at 120-160 deg.C while irradiating with ultraviolet rays to give m-trichloromethylbenzoyl chloride, which is then reacted with m-toluic acid in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, e.g. AlCl3 or TiCl4, etc., particularly preferably FeCl3, at 120-160 deg.C. The resultant isophthaloyl dichloride and toluoyl chloride are separated by distillation. The latter is refed to the initial step and the former is directly used as a product. EFFECT:The aimed compound containing almost no unclear substituted chlorination products can be obtained in high purity without carrying out special purifying operation. |
