PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a substrate for the determination of amylase activity, in high yield and efficiency, by reacting a nitrophenol compound with a terminal-halogenated acylated sugar in the presence of a base and a Lewis acid catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be produced by reacting (A) a nitrophenol compound (preferably O- or P-nitrophenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol, 2-nitro-1- naphthol or 2,4-dinitro-1-naphthol) with (B) a terminal-halogenated acylated sugar [preferably hexadecaacyl maltopentaosyl halide of formula (R is 1-5C alkyl; X is halogen)] in the presence of (C) an organic base (e.g. triethylamine) or an inorganic base and (D) a Lewis acid catalyst (e.g. mercuric bromide, a perchlorate, mercuric cyanide, silver oxide, etc.).
