PURPOSE:To improve the yield of ethylene, by a process which comprises thermally cracking a hydrocarbon in a tubular reaction oven, wherein methane is fed into a tubular cracker and the cracker is heated at a predetermined temp. CONSTITUTION:A preheated starting hydrocarbon 1 and steam 3 are fed into a tubular cracking oven 2. At the same time, methane 8 is fed into a tubular cracker 4 so that the amt. of methane is at least 30wt% at the outlet of cracker based on the starting hydrocarbon 1. The cracker 4 is heated so that the outlet temp. thereof is at least 850 deg.C, thereby cracking the starting hydrocarbon 1. The reaction fluid is quenched in a quenching device 10 and fed into a separation-purification system 12, where it is separated into an org. hydrocarbon 14, an olefin product 15, methane 17, etc. A part of the methane 17 is circulated into the cracker 4. This brings about an increase in the methyl radical concn., and the coupling effect thereof contributes to an improvement in the yield of ethylene.
