PURPOSE:To attain accurate picture reading by arranging at least one of an image pickup means and a protection member tiltedly with respect to the center ray of a luminous flux made incident on an image pickup means from a picture original so as to reduce undesired harmful light. CONSTITUTION:A package 15 including an image pickup element 13 and a protection glass plate 16 is arranged while being rotated by an angle theta around in the vertical direction in total. The luminous flux from a film picture 7 is focused by a projecting lens 12, is transmitted through the slit aperture 17a of a light shield mask 17 and the protection glass plate 16, made incident on the photodetecting element 13a of the image pickup element 13 to attain the reading. On the other hand, the reflected luminous flux from the image pickup element 13 is propagated by the angle of 2theta in horizontal direction with respect to the incident luminous flux and made incident obliquely on a position apart from the luminous flux incident position from the projecting lens 12 to the protection glass plate 16, and the luminous flux reflected on the inner face of the protection glass plate 16 is made incident on a position apart from the position of the photodetecting element 13a. Thus, no harmful light is made incident on the photodetecting element 13a.
