NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I or formula II [R<1>-R<3> are H, methyl or methoxy; Z is group of formula III (R<4> and R<5> are lower alkyl or benzyl) or an N-containing heterocyclic group bonding through the N atom] or its hydroquinone compound. EXAMPLE:4-(2,5-Dihydroxy)phenyl-4-phenyl-1-morpholino-1-oxobutane. USE:A cerebral function improving agent. It has excellent antilipoperoxide action and exhibits excellent effect against oxygen-deficient state of cerebral nerve cells. PREPARATION:gamma-Phenyl-gamma-butyrolactone is made to react with a phenol derivative of formula IV (Y is H or OH) and the resultant benzoxepin-2-one derivative of formula V is made to react with a secondary amine and oxidized to obtain the objective compound of formula I, which is reduced to obtain another objective compound of formula II.
