PURPOSE:To uniformly heat an ingot and to improve the yield of a product at the time of rolling by disposing the ingot imposed via stands on the heath in a holding furnace provided with burners in the upper part of side walls within an adequate region. CONSTITUTION:The titanium ingot 22 is imposed via the stand members 16, 18, 20 on the hearth 14 in the holding furnace 10 and flames are horizontally ejected from the plural burners 12, 12 provided in the upper part of the furnace side wall. The above-mentiond titanium ingot 22 is disposed within the height region of 30-85% of the height L from the hearth 14 to the center of the burner 12. The combustion gases of the burner 12 are thereby directed downward along the side walls of the furnace 10 and the further brought into collision against the hearth 14, along with which the gases are blown by below the ingot 22. The ingot 22 is thus uniformly heated from the periphery.
