PURPOSE:To control the jump of a rotary head with high precision by calculating track jump data corresponding to the running speed of a recording carrier. CONSTITUTION:In the case of the reproducing operation at variable speed, the running speed of a magnetic tape 1 and the reproduced phase due to a video head 7 are measured based on the reproduced output which the video head 7 reproduces form an inclined recording track on the magnetic tape 1. Jump data which shifts the video head 7 to the start of an inclined recording track, which should be next traced by the video head 7, is operated at every trace by an operation processing part based on the obtained speed information and phase information, and a bimorph plate 6 is driven to control the jump of the video head 7. Thus, the inclination of a track jump discriminating boundary line used for the operation of jump data can be set optionally by the operation processing part 40 to control the jump of the video head with the desired precision.
