PURPOSE:To shorten a printing time, by printing both during the feeding of a transfer recording paper forward and during the feeding of the paper backward. CONSTITUTION:A multicolor ink ribbon 3 and a transfer recording paper 4 are placed between a printing head 1 and a platen 2 so supported that it can be rotated forward and reversely. While feeding the paper 4 from the left end position to the right end position thereof by rotating the platen 2 forward, a first color 5 is thermally transferred onto the paper 4. Next, the ink ribbon 3 is taken up so that a second color 6 is positioned on the planten 2. Then, the second color 6 is thermally transferred onto the paper 4 while returning the paper 4 from the right end position to the left end position thereof by reversely rotating the platen 2. Namely, the paper 1 is reciprocated one time during printing in the first color 5 and the second color 6. Thus, thermal transfer of, for example, four colors is conducted by only two reciprocations of the paper 4, the number of reciprocations being one half of the conventional four reciprocations, and accordingly, printing time can be shortened.
