In order to release the operator of a technical apparatus from the task of continuously testing for sufficiently good viewing conditions through a protective pane and from operating cleaning devices, the aim is for an optoelectronic device to check the condition of the protective pane continuously or at fixed time intervals and, if necessary, to initiate countermeasures. This can be performed by measuring the degree of scattering and/or the degree of attenuation for light which penetrates or is reflected, and evaluating the measurement results. An optotransmitter is projected onto a photoreceiver through the protective pane by a lens after penetration/reflection of the emitted light. Water drops and/or particles of dirt adhering scatter and attenuate the light. If further photoreceivers, onto which the scattered components of the image fall, are arranged next to the photoreceiver for the normal projection, it is possible to draw conclusions on the nature and degree of the interference and to initiate countermeasures on the basis of the interrelationships of the photosignals. Windscreens of motor vehicles and ships, but also protective panes in industrial installations come into consideration as fields of application.
