The electrode holder comprises contact jaws which with their respective contact surface bear under pressure against the outer surface of a carbon or graphite electrode. In this case, it is essential that the contact surface of one contact jaw is made convexly in cross-section perpendicularly to the axis of the electrode. The result is great specific contact pressure between the contact jaws and the electrode. <IMAGE>
