PURPOSE:To lower a transmission bit rate by multiplexing and sending a level difference and a phase difference of both channel signals recorded stereophonically by two microphones and a signal obtained by adding and monoaurally converting the signals of both the channels, and signals encoded by a coder to the reception side. CONSTITUTION:A level difference detection section 12 detects a level difference of an audio signal recorded stereophonically by the microphones 1, 2 with respect to, e.g., a signal of the microphone 1, a phase detector 4 detects the phase difference and the results are fed respectively to a multiplexing circuit 7. An adder 5 adds signals of both the channels to form a monaural signal, which is encoded by the coder 6 and multiplexed by a multiplexer circuit 7 and the result is sent to the reception side. The reception side uses a demultiplexer circuit 20 to demultiplex the received signal into signals representing the phase difference, level difference and the encoded signal as the monaural signal, and the result is outputted from speakers 28, 29 as a stereo signal. Since the signal sent from the transmission side consists of a signal being the result of encoding the monaural signal, the phase difference and the level difference, the signal is sent at a low bit rate.
