PURPOSE:To quickly segment an arbitrary area by securing a rectangular area in the same side as rectangular areas circumscribing the arbitrary area in image data and logically operating the rectangular areas circumscribing the arbitrary area in the image data. CONSTITUTION:If a display figure is enclosed by a cursor position data group 19, the rectangular areas circumscribing the arbitrary area and the area in the same size as an area 20 are secured in a memory, and the area 23 in the same shape as the arbitrary area is written in black in the rectangular area 21 of the memory. A rectangular area 21 equipped with a blacked area and the rectangular are 20 are logically operated, and the results are shifted to the rectangular area in the memory, thereby obtaining a segment area 24.
