PURPOSE:To obtain a copolymer in high yields by smoothly advancing copolymerization, by using a combination of a Lewis acid with a three- or four-membered cyclic ether as a catalyst in the copolymerization of te trahydrofuran with lactones. CONSTITUTION:A copolymer can be produced in good efficiency by copo lymerizing tetrahydrofuran with lactones (e.g., beta-propiolactone or epsilon-caprolactone) by using a combination of a Lewis acid with a three- or four-membered cyclic ether as a catalyst. Examples of said Lewis acids include boron trifluoride, tin tetrachloride and a diethylene ether/antimony pentafluoride complex. Examples of said three- or four-membered cyclic ethers include propylene oxide, epichlorohydrin and oxetane. The obtained copolymer is useful as a material for a soft segment of a polyurethane resin, polyester resin, etc.
