PURPOSE:To automatically measure the thickness of the coated film of a steel strip on-line, by providing a roll edge part not participated in the painting work of the steel strip to the end part of a coating roll and measuring coating quantity on the basis of the paint scraped off from said edge part. CONSTITUTION:For example, in a reverse roll coating method, the quantity of the paint scraped off from the surfaces of the roll edge parts 3-1 provided to both ends of a reverse coating roll 3 by the scraping blades 5 brought into contact with said roll edge parts 3-1 is measured. This scraped-off quantity M, known paint solid concn. alpha, a blade width W, a measuring time theta and a steel strip coating speed Rs are used and the coating quantity (t) on the steel strip 6 by formula I is calculated to measure a film thickness. As a result, since the coating film thickness can be continuously measured with good accuracy, the automation of a painting line is promoted.
