PURPOSE:To improve safety and measurement accuracy by utilizing a stress induction type polarization plane maintaining optical fiber as a temperature sensing element for temperature measurement. CONSTITUTION:Circular polarized light generated by a circuit polarized light generator 11 is given a retardation by a retarding device 12 and transmitted to single-mode optical fibers 14A-14D. Temperature sensing elements 15A-15D provided to optical fibers 14A-14D consist of strain induction type polarization plane maintaining optical fibers. Analyzers 17A-17D supply only (x) linear polarized wave components of polarized light beams appearing at the output terminals of the respective temperature sensing elements 15A-15D to phototransistors 18A-18D. The outputs of the phototransistors 18A-18D are supplied to a temperature display system 22 through a switch system 19 and a maximum signal detection system 21.
