PURPOSE:To shorten the time for retrieving the matching coincidence point between a master fingerprint image and a sample fingerprint image by performing preliminary matching by using a small image size which is 1/4-1/8 as large as an image for matching. CONSTITUTION:Part (48X48 bits) of the normal image (96X96 bits) for matching is matched preliminarily and only when a preliminary matching rate larger than a practical reference (55%) is obtained, the remaining 3/4 area is operated additionally and an advance to entire-surface matching is made. In this case, none of fingerprints of other persons normally reaches this reference value (55%), so a matching process can be finished at the stage of the preliminary matching.
