PURPOSE:To apply to both edge lines of 8 connections and 4 connections by bringing a light point picture element which has been detected first, and light point picture elements existing in 8 neighborhoods centering around said picture element, and thereafter, deciding a notice point to be a branch point, when the light point picture element still remains. CONSTITUTION:An edge line image of an input image is derived, a search is executed along an edge line, a coordinate of a light point picture element which has been detected first is derived and it becomes a notice point. Picture elements of 8 neighborhoods around the notice point are copied in other memory, and whether a light point exists in one of four diagonal positions or opposite side positions, respectively or not is checked. If even one exists, one arbitrary piece of them is brought to a dark point as a temporary notice point. With regard to the temporary notice point, whether a light point exists or not is checked in the same way, and if any, its light point picture element is brought to a dark point as a new temporary notice point, and it is repeated until a point to be a new temporary notice point comes not to be detected. At this time point, it is decided that the original notice point is not a branch point, unless the light point picture element remains in a copy area, and said notice point is a branch point, if even one remains, and its coordinate is displayed on a display.
