A sealing, frictionally entrained, ceramic machine component has at least one non-reflecting sliding and sealing surface having a mean roughness (Ra) greater than 0.1 mu m and less than or equal to 0.8 mu m. This machine component is manufactured by shaping and sintering a green ceramic body, rectifying its plane or cylindrical surfaces, if necessary washing it, and then polishing it by abrasion in the presence of an aqueous phase until the required mean roughness of the machine component is attained.
