PURPOSE:To prevent a picture from being distorted by making the leading timing of a 2nd transfer clock of a 3-phase transfer clock coincident with the lead timing of a 1st transfer clock so as to enhance the discharging capability of undesired electric charges of a horizontal shift resister and eliminating its residence. CONSTITUTION:In applying vertical transfer clocks 25a, 25B, 25c to an electrode 21, a potential barrier existing at the border is eliminated by using the vertical transfer clock 25B. Thus, it is possible for an undesired electric charge of an H-CCD 6 that it reverses the nearest photosensing section 15 via a V-CCD 5, from which the charge is discharged to an overflow drain 17. Thus, the undesired electric charge of the H-CCD 6 is discharged more efficiently. Thus, the distorted picture is only one picture element line formed by the photosensing section nearest the H-CCD 6 and in using an image pickup element having the line as a dummy line, no picture distortion takes place.
