The subject of the present invention is a building block to be coated or left exposed, the mould for manufacturing it and a method for shaping the blocks. According to the invention, the conventional hollow or perforated building block 1 has an upper face 8 intended to receive a mortar bedding and comprises, on this upper face 8, at least two recesses 13 of limited surface area making it possible, on the one hand, to position keying inserts intended to interact tangentially with the lateral faces 2, 3 of the upper block so as to lock it laterally and, on the other hand, to keep a sufficient course plane at the upper surface 8 for the possible installation of a mortar bedding or of a poured or masoned vertical joint between two blocks. <IMAGE>
