PURPOSE:To improve the rigidity of the whole valve gear system by providing a mechanical lash adjuster consisting of a pivot portion bearing against a rocker arm, an adjuster body supporting the pivot portion and an elastic member for pivotably urging the adjuster body. CONSTITUTION:When a cam 1 is rotated, a rocker arm 2 is swung to move to and away from a valve stem 3, so that a valve clearance is adjusted. Thus, the rocker arm 2 is supported by a mechanical lash adjuster 5. Namely the adjuster 5 is constituted from a pivot portion 4 bearing against the rocker arm 2 to move vertically, a rotatable adjuster body 8 for moving vertically the pivot portion 4 and an elastic member 9 for pivotably urging the adjuster body 8 in the direction of upward projection. And the adjuster body 8 is rotated to depress the pivot portion 4 through transmitting means 10, 8b by a diaphragm actuator (not shown) in the low rotation and load of an internal combustion engine.
