PURPOSE:To form the title polarizing plane maintaining optical fiber with the transmission performance not deteriorated even in a long-distance transmission by grinding the outer periphery of the core rod consisting of a core and a clad by a specified method, depositing fine glass particles on the outer periphery, and sintering the fine particles. CONSTITUTION:Both sides 9 of the core rod 8 consisting of a core 6 and a clad 7 are ground in the axial direction, fine glass particles 10 are deposited on the outer periphery of the core rod, and the fine particles are sintered to form a preform. The preform is then heated and drawn to obtain the polarizing plane maintaining optical fiber. By such a process, the core 6 and the clad 7 are made elliptic in the directions orthogonal to each other by utilizing the shrinkage force generated when the fine glass particles 10 to be used as a support are sintered, hence the polarization dispersion of the orthogonal polarization mode is reduced, the expanse of the pulse is reduced, and broad-band transmission is made possible. Namely, the generation of a pulse echo is suppressed, and the deterioration in the transmission quality can be prevented. |
