PURPOSE:To obtain glass base material useful for optical communication, etc., having excellent quality in a short time and large quantities, by accumulating glass on a rod-like target with specified marks from an apparatus for generating glass and thereafter by stopping the generation of glass. CONSTITUTION:The rod-like target 1 is obtd. by marking two points, A and B, at interval of about 700mm on a rod such as quartz glass rod of about 20mm diameter. Glass such as oxide glass fine powder, etc., is accumulated between A and B outside of target 1 by traversing the apparatus for generating glass 2 consisting of burners arranged at desired interval with combustible gases as heating source, in parallel with the axis of the target 1. When the apparatus 2 is traversed out of A and B, supply of raw material 11 is stopped with a valve 10 and then, generation of glass from a burner 14 is stopped to produce the glass base material of soot preform 3 on the target. As occasion demands, glass material for optical communication is produced from this glass base material. |
