Improved process for heat production by burning a heavy fuel oil containing from 10 to 2000 ppm by weight, calculated as molybdenum, of solid particles. These solid particles originate from the hydrotreatment of a residual oil with a catalyst which is soluble or dispersed in the feedstock; these catalysts are, for example, phosphomolybdic acid, molybdenum blues, molybdenum naphthenate or molybdenum acetylacetonate. The unburned matter content, measured using NFX standard 43-003, is considerably reduced in the case of the fuel oils of the invention.
