<p>PURPOSE:To prevent the deterioration in resolution due to an approximation from being generated by approximately expressing three-color image data only by means of reference color data for approximately one color, and approximately reproducing the picture element values of the other two colors from the polynomial of a reference color picture element value. CONSTITUTION:After three-color resolution scanning, a color original picture 1 is converted to red, green and blue digital images (Rij), (Gij) and (Bij) by being sampled and quantized. Next, a certain color among the three colors, for example, a green picture element value Gij is set to a reference color, and picture element values Rij and Bij of the other two colors are encoded so as to be approximately expressed.
