In the process, crushed seeds of carduus marianus were refluxed with ethyl acetate. The resulting residue was treated with a mixt. contg. 3 parts of methanol, 1 part of water, and 3 parts of trichloro ethylene. The upper layer was treated with trichloro ethylene, filtered with charcoal, and concd. to give silymarin.
