Capacitive plates are placed near each side of the head of the person suffering from auditory hallucinations. A very high voltage, e.g. several million volts, is modulated at high frequency in accordance with the method developed by J.A. d'Arsonval in 1892. A strong electric field then causes the Stark effect (named after Johannes Stark 1874-1957). The atoms of the receptors in the membrane of the patient's acoustic nerve cells are affected by the field and the absorption wavelength of the atoms is altered. The frequency is tuned until the patient tells the practitioner that the hallucinations are reduced. As a result, the membranes will no longer resonate at the detected psychotic wavelength and the hallucinations will cease.
|
