PURPOSE:To enable a single printer to perform high-speed high-quality printing on vertical-type passbooks, horizontal-type passbooks and business forms by providing first and second movable platens for the vertical-type and horizontal- type passbooks and the business forms, and a platen-driving means for selectively positioning one of the two platens at a common printing position. CONSTITUTION:When a printing medium 1 is a horizontal-type passbook, a first platen 10 is positioned at a common printing position to face a printing head 15, and the passbook on the platen 10 is pressed against a guide plate 14a by springs 12. Then, printing is carried out by moving a carriage frame 16 along guide shafts 17a, 17b. When the printing medium 1 is a vertical-type passbook, the platen 1 and a second platen 11 are moved in parallel, whereby the platen 11 is positioned at the common printing position to face the head 15. Then, one of two halves of the platen 11, which is bisected, is made to abut on one-side part of the passbook while the other half is made to abut on the other-side part of the passbook, with the central fold as a boundary, and printing is conducted by pressing the passbook against the guide plate 14a on the upper side by the springs 13. |
