The imidazodiazepine derivatives of the general formula …<IMAGE>… in which A together with the two carbon atoms indicated by alpha and beta is one of the groups …<IMAGE>… R<1> is a partially unsaturated lower hydrocarbon group optionally substituted by hydroxyl, oxo, aryl or the group -OR, -SR or -OCOR, or is a lower alkyl group substituted by aryl or the group -OR', -SR' or -OCOR', R and R' are each aryl or a saturated or partially unsaturated C1-18-hydrocarbon group optionally substituted by aryl or lower alkoxy, R<2> is hydrogen and R<3> is lower alkyl or R<2> and R<3> together are dimethylene or trimethylene and R<4> and R<5> are each hydrogen, halogen, trifluoromethyl, cyano, nitro or lower alkyl, where the group -OR' has a meaning different from lower alkoxy, and where the compounds of the formula I have the (S) or (R,S) configuration with respect to the carbon atom indicated by gamma when R<2> and R<3> together are dimethylene or trimethylene, can be used for controlling or preventing convulsions, anxiety states, states of stress, states of agitation and sleep disturbances and/or for the partial or complete selective antagonism of some or all actions displayed by tranquillising 1,4-benzodiazepines or other substances via the central benzodiazepine receptors. |
