Appliance and method for electrocoagulation of coating particles dispersed in water, which appliance has a flow path in the form of a trough, open at the top, for the water to be treated. In order to generate a corona discharge and an electrostatic field through which the water to be treated flows, there are arranged above the flow path a plurality of wire- or rod-like brushing electrodes (spraying electrodes, emission electrodes) which run parallel to the flow path and are connected to the negative terminal of a direct-current (d.c.) voltage source whose positive terminal is connected to the electrically conductive bottom of the trough.
