Novel and useful silylenol intermediates useful for preparing penem and carbapenem antibacterials are disclosed. Such silyenol intermediates are of the formula: <CHEM> wherein J is -SiR<1>R<2>R<3>; R<1>, R<2> and R<3> independently represent lower alkyl or phenyl, T is hydrogen, or a blocking group T min , wherein T min is phenyl; phenyl substituted with loweralkyl, alkoxy or halogen; phenylalkyl; -CR<5>R<6>R<7> wherein R<5> and R<6> independently represent hydrogen or loweralkyl, and R<7> represents phenyl, phenyl substituted with loweralkyl, alkoxy or halogen, phenylalkyl, alkoxy, phenoxy, phenoxy substituted with loweralkyl, alkoxy or halogen, or -CR<8>=CR<9>R<1><0> wherein R<8>, R<9> and R<1><0> independently represent hydrogen or loweralkyl; and Ar is phenyl or phenyl substituted with nitro (-NO2), lower alkyl, alkoxy, or halo. |
