FILAMENT HOLDER FOR A ROTATING FILAMENT VEGETATION CUTTER

A monofilament holder (28) used in a vegetation cutter (10) has four quadrants (38a-38d) and has a series of clips (44) between each quadrant through which monofilament (30 and 32) is held by the holder (28). The periphery (62a-62d) of each quadrant is an arc slightly eccentric from the radial center (50) of the holder (28), thereby creating a protrusion (64a-64d) on the direction of rotation side of the clip area (44). This protrusion (64a-64d) keeps hard objects (66) away from the holder (28) periphery (62a-62d) on the other side of the clip area (44), thereby preventing the shearing of the monofilament (30 and 32). To reduce weight, recesses (40 and 52a-52d) are formed on both sides (34 and 36) of the holder (28) and the ground (26) facing recesses (40) are angled to avoid entrapment of grass. When the holder (28) is used with an impeller type hovering lawnmower (10), the holder (28) diameter is made substantially the same as the impeller (18) diameter to act as a shield for the impeller (18) against abrasion.
