The gas stream from a brewing pan or mash pan contg. water vapour charged with strong-smelling materials, is drawn by a fan into a counter flow coating condenser, and emerges at about 92 deg. C. in the form of a mist. with hop oil and other strong smelling components largely gasified. A jet-stream pump blows the mist. tangentially into a cyclone wherein the heavier liq. fraction is taken downwards to a collector tank for further treatment. Sepd. gas rises in an axial pipe to a chamber contg. adsorbent, e.g. active carbon, for strong smelling components. The adsorbent is regenerated in known manner, and may operate in parallel with a second adsorber to prevent interruption. Purified gas is discharged into the atmos. or to destroy any residual undersirable cpds. can be taken into the hot fumes produced by a furnace. e.g. the heater for the brewing pan. ADVANTAGE - Strong-smelling materials, whether water-soluble or not, are effectively treated, avoiding atmos. pollution for workers and public.
