This invention provides for labeling reagents and labeled targets. The labeling reagents consist of a dye composition comprising a reactive group covalently linked to a dye. The reactive group comprises two or more of unsaturated aliphatic groups, unsaturated heterocyclic groups and aromatic groups. The dye composition may further comprise a charged or polar R' group or a reactive group R x. The dye composition may be bound to a target, forming a labeled target.
