To test the operation of a pneumatic yarn splicer at a textile machine, such as a winder, before the yarn ends are laid in the splicing channels gas is delivered for a given time period and the outflow of gas at a given opening in the splicing head is measured, and compared with a reference value, obtd. from an identical splicing appts... Any deviation shown by the comparison is taken as a criterium for the operation of the splicing head under test to give a trouble-free splicing action. Pref. the pressure of the emerging gas from the splicing head is measured at the determined opening, for comparison, or its speed is measured as a monitoring value, or the gas temp. is ued. At least two qualities of the gas are measured simultaneously for comparison with reference values. In addition, the temp. of the splicing channel in the splicing head is measured. The test appts. (20) has a measurement tube (21) as the splicing gas feed, with an exchangeable adaptor (22) to connect it to the splicing head (10c) of the splicing appts. (9c). A monitor (26,30) at least establishes one value of the gas, through a pressure monitor, a flow speed monitor (30), and a thermal sensor (26). At least two monitors register two different aspects of the gas. The test appts. (20) has a further thermal sensor to measure the temp. of the splicing head (10c). A computer (50) is connected (26a,30a) to the monitors (26,30) for the measured values to be displayed, stored and to be compared with reference values. The adaptor (22) allows the test appts. (20) to be connected to different splicing heads at various splicing units, and the adaptor (22) is exchangeable and of a material with a low thermal conductivity. An insert (28,29) in the measurement tube (21), in front of the speed monitor (30), eliminates any twist in the gas stream.
