PREPARATION OF PERHYDRO-1,4:5,8-DIMETHANONAPHTHALENE-2,3-DIMETHANOL

PURPOSE:To prepare the subject compound employed as a raw material for polymers useful as various structural materials in a high yield in a short time by reacting a fumaric acid diester with cyclopentadiene in the presence of a catalyst and subsequently reacting the reaction product with hydrogen. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I (R<1> and R<2> are alkyl) is reacted with cyclopentadiene or dicyclopentadiene preferably in a molar ratio of 1:2-4 at 200-250 deg.C, especially 210-240 deg.C, in a solvent such as benzene to prepare a compound of formula II. The compound of formula II is reacted with hydrogen gas in the presence of a copper-chromium or zinc oxide catalyst to prepare the objective compound. In the second stage reaction the temperature is ordinarily 150-350 deg.C and the pressure of the hydrogen gas is ordinarily >=100kg/cm<2>. The catalyst is used in an amount of 0.001-20wt.% based on the compound of formula II.
