The invention relates to a method for operating a hydrostatic traction drive having a hydraulic pump which can be driven by a drive motor and having at least one hydraulic motor, wherein an energy-saving mode can be activated in defined operating phases, in which energy-saving mode the drive motor is operated at a lower drive speed. Here, an output speed gradient, a speed difference between a requested output speed and an actual output speed and an accelerator pedal gradient are determined before the activation of the energy-saving mode, and are taken into consideration by a controller in such a way that the energy-saving mode can be activated only when all determined values are lower than a respectively predefined limit value. Furthermore, a hydrostatic traction drive is specified which is suitable for carrying out the method.
